TRANSCRIPTION: PODCAST GUESTING
Kamala Chambers
On this episode, we’re going to talk about how you can get have a podcast guesting and be a guest on multiple shows.
We are excited to talk about how to get more publicity by using podcast guesting. This has been something that’s important for Luis and me.
What Podcast Guesting Can Do
Kamala Chambers
Podcast Guesting on over a hundred shows has helped to dial in our message, reach our broader audience, drive traffic to our website, and get more sales and more clients. So, I want to make sure that we cover this topic about podcast guesting again because it’s such an important one.
The first thing I want to talk about here, Luis, is how to get your message dialed in.
Luis Congdon
Let’s just assume that you’ve grabbed one of our guides that teaches you to do podcast guesting and so, now, we’re diving in a little bit deeper.
Today, we’re not going to be covering how to get booked. We’re going to assume that you can have that piece down, but how do you dial your message so you’re an incredible podcast guest? So that when you’re a guest, people are excited to listen to you and they also want to visit your website. They want to buy your products and they become fans. Those people message you on social media and they’re raving about you.
Podcast Guesting – Have A Message Dialed In
Luis Congdon
To have that, you need to have a message that is dialed in and speaks to the audience.
The first thing you need to know about having a message dialed in is that it’s not about you. It’s about the show that you’re on and the audience.
Luis Congdon
Let’s say, you’re a marketer. When you dial in your message, you don’t particularly don’t want to go on a show and just rave about the success that you’ve had as a marketer and how great you are. Instead, you want to talk about some of the successes and then take that and bundle it up with how that helps the listener, and how this message or this particular win speaks to a bigger message.
So as a marketer, you can say “I’m committed to helping people make millions of dollars and here are some examples of ways that we’ve done that.”
Podcast Guesting – Find Three Topics You Can Talk About
Kamala Chambers
I encourage you to find three topics that you can talk about. Maybe it’s something that you are a master at, or it is a skillset that you have.
Make sure that you’re not just getting booked on podcasts just because you want to get booked on podcasts. It’s a strategic plan.
Podcast Guesting- Think What You Want To Offer As An End Game
Kamala Chambers
So think about what it is you want to offer as an end game. What is the thing that you want to drive buzz? Once you have that dialed in, think about three topics that you can talk about that will help drive to the end game.
Luis Congdon
When you have your list of ideas or three pieces of content that you feel comfortable speaking about, another piece that’s important regarding getting your message dialed in is to offer the show host and its listeners something that you can give away that is valuable and will help the listener improve in that topic that you’ve talked about further.
Podcast Guesting – Give Away Something That’s Valuable
Luis Congdon
Then, you can also create some traffic that will come to your website or landing page and get some of those opt-ins so your message goes deeper than just “Hey, this is some information.” But rather, you go “Hey, this is some information and if you want more, you can go here,” and it will do XYZ for you.
Kamala Chambers
That topic is such an important thing.
What are your talking points? What are the things that you’re going to present yourself as an expert in solving for people’s audience? That brings us to finding shows that match your message. You want to find shows that are related to the topics that you want to talk about.
Podcast Guesting – Shows That Match Your Message
Kamala Chambers
If you want to talk about health, happiness, and relationships, you don’t want to get booked on a show that’s for doctors. You want to find shows that are specific to your niche and audience.
Luis, what more do you want to talk about? Let’s iron out this topic a little more. How do you find those shows that are a match?
Podcast Guesting – Have A Message That Appeals To Multiple Audiences
Luis Congdon
Something I want to say about that with Kamala’s point is that I think that it’s beneficial and useful for you to have a message and be able to share it in a way that can appeal to multiple audiences.
Let’s say you are a marketer and you want to go on a parenting show, you can talk about how marketing can help parents create jobs with increased freedom, or how understanding copywriting can help stay at home moms to work from home, or how to sell using social media. You could go on a parenting show and talk about how copywriting or how marketing has helped you as a parent.
You can find those particular angles and niches, but first, you need to understand your message and have that honed in first. Then, you can start playing with it and utilizing it in different more unique ways.
Kamala Chambers
Yeah, that’s all great stuff and from there, you basically want to find those shows and do some research. I’d suggest making a list of 20-30 different shows that you feel like you’d be a good fit for.
Podcast Guesting – Research What Podcasts Have Covered The Topic You Want To Talk About
Kamala Chambers
One great tool is just going into iTunes and going into the search bar and look for some of the subjects you want to talk about and you’re an expert in. You can just go up to the top and maybe type in “publishing a book” and see what other episodes or podcasts have covered about that topic. You know that it’s ‘that podcast’ might be a good fit for you.
Luis Congdon
When you’re doing this too, something that will help you is you can type in some of the keywords that are relevant to your field or some more long tail keywords like “how to publish a book” and look at podcasts that have covered that topic.
Podcasting Guesting – Check If A Podcast Is A Match For You
Luis Congdon
The other things you want to do to make sure that the podcast is a match for you is check:
How often does the show publish? When was their most recent podcast episode published? What kinds of guests had they had on their show? Is it a solo-based show or is it a show that has guests? Was it a year or two ago that the most recent episode came out?
Are their episodes generally only two minutes? Are they 10 minutes? Are they 45 minutes? Did they tend to have reputable and respectable guests on their show? Do they have a link from iTunes that goes to their website? Does their website look professional? Do they look like people that know their stuff?
All this stuff matters because a lot of us can’t get those metrics that tell us how big a show is, if the show is sponsored, how big of an email list they have, and the number of listeners the show gets.
Podcast Guesting – Get In Shows That Are Valuable
Luis Congdon
We want to know that we’re doing podcast guesting and getting booked on shows that are worthwhile and valuable.
While I’ve been on tons of shows and I found pretty much every single one to be of value and worth my time, what I found is to take just a few extra minutes to scroll through the podcast episodes and ask myself “Who did they have on their show last? Have they had some reputable names that I’ve heard of or people that are respectable and are professionals? Are they consistent in publishing their podcasts?”
Maybe they’re not so consistent that it comes out every single week but they’re consistent in that there’s an episode just a week or two ago that came out. Before that, it was a few days and before that, it was a week.
I can see that there are people that are pushing out regular content. Then, I also go to a website and their website, at the very least, decent if not good. If it’s a good website, now I know they are buttoned up and their show means something to them. They probably have an audience and there are people that take this podcasting and this online business thing seriously which will be good for me to be on that platform.
Those are the key things to look for when you’re looking to see if a show is a match.
Does it match with the particular thing that you talk about? Is it the kind of audience that you want to tap into? Is the show consistent enough that you know that if you’re on it, it will be worthwhile and valuable? Did they have some amazing guests?
Podcast Guesting Makes You Somebody Of Equal Value With Other Powerful Individuals
Luis Congdon
Because if you go on a show and they’ve had Jack Canfield or Oprah Winfrey as guests, then you’re going to be joining this incredible roster of a show that’s had these amazing guests. Maybe these guests have decided to share the show with their audience. That means the show now has this kind of fandom that has grown because they’ve had amazing guests.
Now, you’re part of that roster and you can utilize it as something for bragging rights later on. “I’ve been on the show that’s had Jack Canfield and Robert Kiyosaki. Don’t you want me on your show?” Of course, people will want you.
If you can have a podcast guesting or get on stages or television shows that have had these powerful individuals on as guests, then it means that you are somebody who is also of equal value.
Kamala Chambers
There you have it.
Baseline For Podcast Guesting
Kamala Chambers
This is something I encourage you to go out today and implement. Get honed on what your message is, find those three main topics that you can talk about that lead to something bigger for you, and that sets the bar for what you have to offer. Then, find those shows that are going to be a match for you. That’s the baseline for podcast guesting. We will look forward to listening to those episodes.
Keep thriving you all.
