Now that we’ve got the broad view, let’s dive into the process to get yourself booked on podcasts.

How To Find Podcast Shows That Want Guests

How To Be A Guest On Podcasts

Getting booked on shows will require time, research, and some diligence.

The very first step to getting booked is finding shows that you’re a fit for and that allow guests.

One of the methods I use to book myself or clients for shows is the Apple Podcasts App. The iTunes app comes on an iPhone or mac. If you don’t have Apple products, use one of the popular podcast applications for your phone/computer.

While you’re in the Podcast App, type in the names of influencers, authors, and people who are similar to you.

Look for shows that have had your competitors, peers, and similar to people to you. It’s likely that show will be delighted to have you as a guest.

Take note of those shows, and the names of the show’s host, you would like to be on. It’s key you have this information written down for your next step.

How To Get The Contact Information Of Podcast Show Hosts

To get booked on shows you’ll need to gather the contact information of show hosts. Doing that is quite simple.

Using your list jump into Google and type in the name of the shows you found. Then, find the websites of those shows. Type in the name of a show plus the name of a show host. Most top results will yield for you the website of the show.

Once you’re at the website of a show, you can use a nifty and free tool like Email Hunter. This is a free Chrome extension tool that seamlessly connects with google chrome. With Email Hunter, you can grab the emails of the hosts.

Now that you have the host’s email, it’s time to pitch yourself to be a guest. Pitch all of the podcasts you found.

How To Create Your Perfect Pitch For Podcasts

Now that you’ve got your list of shows, the information for the hosts – it’s time to start sending out pitches.

A simple pitch formula to get booked on podcasts

Use a subject line that entices the show host (something like, “I enjoyed X episode” works like butter).

New paragraph: Start the email with a quick and concise compliment.

New paragraph – tell the host a bit about yourself and how having you as a guest will benefit the host.

And in the last paragraph, tell the host you are willing to promote the episode to your audience. And that you will help spread the word of the episode/show.

The key to a perfect pitch

  • Be personable.
  • Make your pitch focus on the value you bring to the show and the host.
  • Make your pitch seem custom written (this is why we use a compliment).
  • Focus on connection – if it feels like you only care about getting on the show, you’ll likely be ignored.
  • Offer to be of value to the host, not just what you can do in the interview.

That’s it!

That formula works wonder. As a matter of fact, I’ve created a whole training to help you get on podcasts. I share the step-by-step formula and templates I used to get booked on 150 podcasts in 3 months. If you’d like that template, check it out here – my podcast pitch template

Resources To Help You Get Booked On More Shows

Podcast Guest.com – Free and very cool places that send out weekly opportunities of podcasts for you to be on.

Be A Guest and Find Guests For Radio or Podcasts  – Go to that website, fill in the info and you’ll start getting leads for guests and to be a guest. FYI – this resource is free and doesn’t always deliver a good guest… So be warned.

Radio Show Guest – This is a fairly new service, I have yet to test it out. Since it was made by a good friend and someone who puts out great content, I am sharing it here. Let me know how it goes.

Podcast Publicity – Get the training that shows you the steps to be a guest on 5 podcasts this month.

Poddit– This is a free resource with an upgrade option. I’ve yet to use it, but I’ve heard good things. Check it, let me know if you like it. As far as I know, you can find shows and pitch directly within the directory.

After The Interview, Here’s How To Be A Guest On More Shows

How To Be A Guest On Podcasts

Wrapping up an interview is a prime opportunity to get yourself on more shows.

The way to do this is to offer the host an extra hand.

When I go on shows, here’s what I say when we’ve stopped recording:

“Hey, that was fun! I really enjoyed doing that. Before we end here today, let me ask you – is there anything that I can do for you?”

Those few words have allowed me to ask for a simple favor that has quadruple my podcast bookings. And most importantly, bookings that didn’t require me to pitch anyone. Before I share more, let me share why it matters to be an ally to any podcaster who interviews you.

How To Be A Guest On Podcasts? Be A Great Guest

As a podcast host and producer, I am well aware that every podcast host expends tremendous energy producing their show.

As a guest, it’s an honor that the host chose to interview me. Not only has the host taken time to interview me, next they’ll take hours to edit. Also, they’ll write up show notes and promote our interview. That’s a lot of free work they’re giving me. With that in mind, I offer to be of service.

Now that I’ve said all that, here’s the big pay off to being in service of podcasters.

After you’ve said those words, most podcasters won’t ask you for anything. But they’ll likely ask you if there’s anything they can do. If they reciprocate that energy of service, you can ask for a simple favor (to help you booked on more shows). That favor is this:

“Well. There is one thing you can do for me. Do you by chance know any podcasters who might like having me as a guest? I am really working to get on more shows and if you know anyone it would be a huge help.”

By following this formula, I’ve made many friends in the podcasting space. And have booked dozens and dozens of shows without writing a single pitch.

When The Interview Is Released

One more to be a guest on more shows is to share podcast interviews you did.

Once you’ve been on a show and it goes live – share it on social media. When you share the episode – tag the show host.

By doing this, you’ll make yourself more visible to other podcasters. And sharing lets people know that you’re doing interviews.

Quite often someone will see your post and that alone will incite the interest of podcast hosts. In many cases, this has turned into invites for me to do more guest spots on podcasts.

To Finish Off…

Before I sign off, let me share a cool video from UFC Hall Of Famer. He personally sent me this testimonial after I helped him get booked on some of the biggest podcasts in the world.
