Teanna Gentry

I am. Thank you for having me. I appreciate it.

Luis Congdon

Thriving Launchers, you guys know that I’m very into health. I’m very into detoxing and just trying to implement things on how to clean your system, but it’s a complicated subject to understand, and I wanted to bring Teanna onto the show.

What exactly is detoxing?

How To Clean Your System – Understand What Detoxing Means

luis-head

Luis Congdon

I know that some of us already know what that means, but let’s break it down and learn something new from Teanna. What is detoxing?

Teanna Gentry

Detoxing, at the studio, we talk about this a lot because we’re focused not only on our fitness but also our overall health and lifestyle goals.

Detoxing is meant to be looking at your entire life, i.e., your friends and family relationships, the food that you’re putting into your body, the lifestyle choices that you’re making with work and rest, your emotions, your stress. It’s looking at your entire life in a circle sort of a picture and the different pieces of the pie that take it up and what you’re spending your time on, your efforts in the day in and day out. Those things go into whether you are in a healthy state or a state that needs some detoxing.

How To Clean Your System – Do Seasonal Detoxing

Teanna Gentry

It’s great in general to do seasonal detoxing; kicking off this New Year in January of 2018, focusing on the different areas that you can look at to detox, and we can go into more of those different areas as we go through this conversation.

kamala-head

Kamala Chambers

I learned a lot about this when I went to nutrition school, but I think it’s an excellent way to look at it. When you talk about emotional detoxing or relationship detoxing, can you explain a little bit more about what you mean by that? How does that help on how to clean your system?

How To Clean Your System And Relationships

Teanna Gentry

Take for example your relationship with your significant other, and so looking at your relationship and thinking ‘Are we interacting positively? How are our social day to day skills? Is it benefiting to your life or is it adding a level of toxicity or a level of angst, stress on your overall emotional status?’

Teanna Gentry How To Clean Your System Thriving Launch Podcast

Teanna Gentry

It is looking at your friendships, your significant other relationships, your work relationships and seeing within those relationships what could you let go of. Maybe it’s a friend that is not helping your life. Possibly they’re causing you more stress. Perhaps it is a task or something on your to-do list every day within your day to day that is adding another layer of emotional angst for your person.

And so, looking at that and saying, “Where do I need to let go of these things if they’re not benefiting me? Where can I add in things that are positive that help with keeping your life in a neutral, happy status versus the negative?”

luis-head

Luis Congdon

I like that.

It made me think of what the Buddhist call equanimity. This sense of what you were saying, neutral, not anxious, not overly emotionally rocked.

Is there a process that you think is important to go through or set of questions that helps on how to clean your system? It’s because, for a lot of us, it’s challenging to identify these areas that cause pain or struggle or strife or emotional upheaval. It’s not something that a lot of us tend to take a moment to ask ourselves “What can we do?” or “What’s happening?” or “How do I identify these areas?”

A lot of us, we got a nine to five, kids, a husband or a wife or a partner, friends, bills and so it can be challenging to ask these question and even to know where to start with how to clean your system

How To Clean Your System And Start Emotional Detoxing

Teanna Gentry

I think about when you go to the doctor, and if you’re getting a shot as a kid or you have surgery, and you look up at the board. The nurse and the doctor ask you how you’re feeling, and they say to pick a face. Pick a smiley face, maybe the face with a line across the middle or the one that has the frown on it, and those are your levels of emotion or pain.

And so, if you think about it in that sense to even start off with all the relationships that you’re in, it would be looking at those relationships with your friends, your relationship with your work, your relationship with your after hours, extracurricular activities. How do all of those things make you feel?

How To Clean Your System – Identify How All Of Your Relationships Make You Feel

Teanna Gentry

I would start with that initial emotional response. If you start from that emotional response of smiley, neutral, or the frown face, that would be a great place to start. From there, looking at the entire relationship or the activity or thing you’re doing and saying, “If it makes me feel positive, okay, awesome. Keep that going.” or “What can I also continue to add to it to keep it in a positive state?”

If it makes me feel in the middle, then it’s okay. I will keep assessing and come back to it. I would say, always coming back to those relationships and things on a monthly basis, if not on a weekly basis.

If it’s a frown face saying, “If it’s not bringing me that happiness, the encouragement, the love, the affection, the positivity that I need in my life, then it’s not worth my time.” Then, look at “How can I let that thing go, or that particular relationship take out of my current lifestyle?”

kamala-head

What are some other things that we could do on a daily basis to detox our health? Or do you feel like if we want to do a detox, we’d have to do this radical diet change for ten days or something like that or do you think it’s more of a daily thing that we can implement?

How To Clean Your System Daily

Teanna Gentry

I would say it’s more of a daily thing.

There are always different perspectives I think in general when it comes to health and wellness. It sounds like you went to a school as well for being a health coach. There are different perspectives and different schools of thought. I think in general when it comes to detoxing outside of the relational end, you come back to your overall health.

‘Are you feeding or fighting disease’ is basically how I look at ways on how to clean your system.

How To Clean Your System – Understand What Feeds And Fights Diseases

Teanna Gentry

If you’re feeding disease, those things in our life and from medical journals have said what elements contribute to disease primarily. Those are your sugars and your toxins that reattribute to add additives in food, and also meat and dairies. Those are the things within the animal realm that can contribute to overall body toxicity which then, correlates highly with specific diseases.

From that perspective, you can look at your day ‘What do you have for breakfast? How do you wake up? Are you creating the alkalinity within your body right away or are you just drinking coffee, pounding a cheeseburger or an egg McMuffin?’ That’s not going to be adding to your overall feeling of health and vibrancy.

We also talk a lot about thriving within our lives. And so for me, what that looks like for example, this morning, I wake up, and I drink lukewarm water because it helps my body to wake up my internal organs. And I put a little apple cider vinegar in it to start my metabolism going, starting to push things out of my body that doesn’t need to be in there because apple cider vinegar helps with your pH levels and again, coming back to that neutral status of making your body more alkaline.

Diet As Another Piece On How To Clean Your System

Teanna Gentry

I think when it comes to detoxing, and on how to clean your system, you can look at it in a lot of different avenues. Typically, it does jump into these different pie chunks as I talked about at the beginning of our conversation where with the food and what you’re drinking, that is a whole another piece of it.

I do the water piece, but then, I also steer clear of dairy, meat, and sugar as much as I can knowing that those things do not help my body. They only hinder it and feed a potential future disease versus fighting against it, which would be your fruits and your veggies, and hitting those hard in finding your nutrients from that.

How To Clean Your System – Keep The Body Alkalized And Hydrated

luis-head

Luis Congdon

I like that too, and I have some morning routines that are focused on alkalizing and super hydrating.

What that means Thriving Launchers is I wake up, and I like to drink plenty of water. I love to super hydrate and then I want to hit the gym and do something I know is going to energize my body and vitalize. At Thriving Launch we love that you kept using that term “thriving.”

Also, some of the things that were talking about how to clean your system made me think about something I once heard. You’re either creating more life, or you’re dying, and you have to consider that when you’re thinking about health.

What I think is interesting as I’m listening to you talk is you guys are a yoga studio. You teach yoga, and you help people utilize yoga or at least that’s what Hot Feet Fitness is known for when I think about it in my mind.

How To Clean Your System As A Whole Experience

luis-head

Luis Congdon

But this whole interview has reminded me that health is a whole experience. It’s not just what you’re doing when you show up to the gym or if you’re doing yoga or if you’re doing cycling. It’s also what you’re doing for the rest of your day in other areas of your life.

Teanna Gentry

Yes, definitely.

I know a lot of people do just think of us for the yoga classes that we offer, but we do provide several other types of classes.

How To Clean Your System – Do Cardio Exercises

Teanna Gentry

We have not only the yoga side, but we have X21 cardio hit workout so that high-intensity interval training that gets your body moving like you said you do in the morning just to hit the gym hard. That’s our hit the hard gym work out.

kamala-head

Kamala Chambers

Do you feel like that’s an essential aspect of how to clean your system, to also incorporate the cardio? That’s also a necessary aspect of the detox?

Teanna Gentry

Yes. Definitely

How To Clean Your System – Open Up The Mind, Body, And Spirit

Teanna Gentry

That’s why when we opened the studio, we offer workout classes, stretch classes, and yoga in that combination. It’s because of looking at how your body will be thriving and living vibrantly and so your body needs cardio. It requires the yoga for the mindfulness and the stress release, but it also needs the stretching to get the body elongated, to help you to age gracefully so that you don’t have that hunched over, driving or always typing at your desk looped to your body.

It’s all about opening up the body and opening up your mind and your spirit to live as healthily as you can.

kamala-head

Kamala Chambers

Before we go, what’s the one last tip you would give the Thriving Launchers to help incorporate detox into their life today?

Teanna Gentry

I would say just make it a natural habit or a thing to choose.

How To Clean Your System – Choose One Little Thing

Teanna Gentry How To Clean Your System Thriving Launch Podcast

Teanna Gentry

Maybe it’s coffee instead of soda or its water instead of that large Frappuccino that you would usually drink. Just choose one little thing and start that with your living healthy, and make that the beginning of your detox and on how to clean your system and then, go from there.

luis-head

Luis Congdon

I love that, starting small.

A lot of us have this tendency to want to go big or go home, and I’m not always a big fan of that saying. I think it’s fantastic at certain times. It’s like this New Year’s thing.

A lot of us think, “Oh, I’m going to lose all this weight. I’m going to get this crazy and awesome body,” and we go hard. We just hit that hard, and we’re running the health.

In my case, it’d be like, “I’m on a new diet. I’m on a new regimen. I’ve got the health coach. I’m weighing my food.” I’m doing all this crazy stuff, and then two to three months later, I just spin out of control because that is way too much all at once.

Start Small To Create A Habit Of How To Clean Your System

luis-head

Luis Congdon

One great way on how to clean your system is to pick small and start with something. If you’re thinking “I want to change my health,” and you start with super hydrating, and that’s the one thing you’re doing, you’re going to notice the difference.

Teanna Gentry

Yeah.

luis-head

Luis Congdon

You can create a habit and celebrate the changes. Then, you can add that next thing as that one thing becomes a natural, regular thing for you to do. It’s so much easier to add then something else to play. I think that’s a very holistic healthy way to talk about it, Teanna.

Thank you so much for coming on the show. Thriving Launchers, we’ll see you in the next episode. I hope you got some take away because today has been a great episode about how to clean your system.

For me, my walk away is pick one thing that I’m choosing to change and focus on that one thing. Don’t be afraid if it’s small.

Thriving Launchers, we’ll see you in the next episode. Thank you so much for being here, Teanna, and until next time, keep thriving you all.
